The morning market

The market opens early, long before the rest of the street wakes up. Boxes of fruit appear on the tables, still cold from the truck. A woman arranges the apples so the best ones face the front. Two neighbours argue about the price of bread, then laugh and buy it anyway. By nine the noise is steady and warm, and nobody remembers how quiet the square was an hour ago.
